The Rustenburg Local Municipality in partnership with SAPS and other law enforcement agencies had on Sunday, 31st December 2017 to Monday, 01st January 2018 held a successful Rustenburg Family Extravaganza at the Olympia Park Stadiumwhere residents and visitors converged to celebrate the dawn of the New Year.
This Family Extravaganza initiative was born out of the need to centralize the new year celebration because of limited security resources as the local security cluster was supposed to monitor widespread and scattered celebration events with the already overstretched resources. The initiative comes as an interventionist strategy to reduce chaos, lawlessness and unbearable situations in the city and to help promote safe and healthy environment.
Residents and visitors seized the moment and came in their numbers to celebrate the new year with the executive mayor of Rustenburg Cllr Mpho Khunou. Around eight to ten thousand party-goers and families descended at the stadium to celebrate the arrival of 2018 with a fireworks display, live bands and DJs’ performance.
Armed police, including both SAPS and Municipal Police were out in force for New Year’s celebrations.
However, the event lived up to its original ideals, inter alia, promote safe and healthy environment. Residents including children had full enjoyment on the last day of 2017.
The Rustenburg Local Municipality wishes residents of Rustenburg a healthy and prosperous 2018.
