Update on the Water Quality Concerns Supplied Through the Vaalkop Treatment

Residents are hereby informed that after the Rustenburg Local Municipality received numerous complaints about water quality from residents in Sunrise, Boitekong Extension 2, 3 & 4, Seraleng, Sondela, Million Dollar and Seraleng Extension, the Municipality undertook to determine the cause of the deterioration in the supply of water to residents.
The Municipality contacted the water service provider (Magalies Water) to conduct a series of tests by using the water which was already in the supply channel. Several points were identified from which water was used as a sample for water testing, including a number of households from the affected areas (Seraleng, Boitekong Extension 2,3 & 4, Sondela and Million Dollar), which received the water through the channel.
The results of the water samples taken revealed that the overall compliance to chronic health risk parameters was noted to be 100% for all the assessed points. The reported colour and odour issues have been noted.
Geosmin is a determinant that taint water with respect to taste, odour or colour and that do not pose an unacceptable health risk if present at concentration values exceeding the numerical limits specified by South African National Standard (SANS) for drinking water.
The water service provider – Magalies Water, has begun the process of implementing corrective measures, specifically to the usage of applicable chemical intent on addressing the odour and colour composition of the water, during this priod residents may also experience low to no pressure of water until the corrective measure of water treatment have been concluded successfully.
