The Rustenburg Local Municipality as Water Services Authority has the mandate and responsibility to conform with the Water Services Act (WSA) 108 of 1997, and also adhere to prescribed compulsory national norms and standards in accordance with Section 9 and 10 of the Act.

Access to safe drinking water is a basic human right and essential to people’s health. Safe drinking water that complies with the South African National Standard (SANS) 241 Drinking Water Specification does not pose a significant risk to health over a lifetime of consumption, including different sensitivities that may occur between life stages. Improving access to safe drinking water can thus result in tangible benefits to public health and every effort should be made to achieve a quality of drinking water that complies with national safety standards.

The Municipality has recently received complaints from residents in the following areas about the water quality:

  • Boitekong
  • Zinniaville
  • Monakato

Upon receipt of these complaints the water maintenance team has been on site flushing the hydrants and the Municipality also took urgent samples of potable water which were subsequently subjected to testing at independent laboratories (Magalies Water and Integral labs) to confirm compliance with SANS 241 standards.  The Water services suppliers (Magalies Water, Rand Water and WSSA) have been immediately informed about the water quality complaints.
