The Rustenburg Local Municipality has received with dismay the allegations that the Rustenburg police intends to arrest Councillors who went to the police station on Saturday to mediate and calm the situation precipitated by arrest of seven community members. The community members came to the police station to get an understanding of why these arrests were effected.
We find it quite interesting that instead of focussing on drugs and prostitution they are now devoting their energies on community and Councillors of the municipality. This clearly risks stirring community’s anger toward the Rustenburg police.
The municipality is of the view that the situation in Rustenburg particularly in respect of some within the South African Police Service, requires serious attention of government at national level. Councillors cannot be the target of the arrest for illegal gathering when the attention has to be on real calm in Rustenburg.
The Rustenburg Local Municipality will this afternoon meet with Councillors and stakeholders to discuss the current situation.
