In the design a traditional Tswana shield is used to indicate change and / or renewal. The shield is charged in base with a thorn tree of natural colour to allude to the natural heritage of the area. In the central part of the shield is placed a horizontal wavy blue line symbolising the importance of water. This is in turn charged with a wavy horizontal white line to symbolise the continuous flow of platinum from the mines, a backbone for wealth and success in the area.
The upper part of the shield is charged with two flat topped hills to allude to the topography of the surrounding area and specifically to the Rustenburg Kloof. A black spoked cogwheel is rising from the kloof and alludes to industry and mining, upon which is based the hopes and dreams of the people. The future is symbolised by the rising sun behind the cogwhee
The shield is ensigned with a rustic mural crown which alludes to the many traditional kraals which can still be found in the area and which offers protection against the elements and wild animals. The frontal part of the mural crown is charged with a white and blue band which is charged with two oranges to symbolise the importance of fruit and vegetable production.
To indicate that Rustenburg has city status the coat of arms have supporters and in this case two sable impalas standing on a rocky ground to allude to the importance of the natural parks and game ranches in the area.
