Introduction

Rustenburg MunicipalityThe Rustenburg Local Municipality was established by Government Notice No 316 of 2000 in terms of section 12(1) of the Municipal Structures Act of 1998 after the disestablishment of the three municipalities mentioned in chapter 2. The Rustenburg Local Municipality comprises the former municipal administrations of Marikana, Monnakato and Rustenburg.

The Council restructured the institution to comply with its service delivery objectives as envisaged by the Municipal Structures Act.

The area of jurisdiction covers approximately 3 500 km² over 35 wards.
The staff component comprises about ± 1 500 employees of which more than 400 positions are currently vacant.
The municipality prioritized 233 vacancies out of the 400 vacancies to be filled in a phased approach over the next three years.
The municipality operates within an executive mayoral system. It has 69 Councilors with an Executive Mayoral Committee consisting out of ten members.
A total of 34 Councilors are elected in terms of proportional representatives and 35 represent wards. Ward Councilors chair ward committees which are responsible for discussing local concerns.
The Council meets once a month to consider recommendations from several Portfolio Committees through a report from the Executive Mayor. Portfolio Committees meet in the first week of every month. The Executive Mayoral Committee meets on a fortnightly basis on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Meetings of the Executive Mayoral Committee are held at a time as decided by the Executive Mayor.
The Rustenburg Local Municipality consists out of a political and administrative structure.
